At minimum, our wood products should be cleaned at least every 12 months with soapy water, a brush and water. These are natural wood products, so some surface discoloration or mould and mildew may occur due to environmental conditions and exposure. Heavier discoloration or mould growth can be removed with Rejuvenator or other similar oxygenating cleaner. If coated, then the coating should be re-applied once it begins to fail, depending on the aspect to the weather re-coat cycle may be as short as 12 months in the case of decking or up to 5 years in the case of cladding.
No. If left uncoated outside, the wood will eventually fade to a light grey colour. By applying a pigmented coating on a regular basis, colour can be maintained.
The first step is to draw up a basic sketch, can calculate the total square meters of area you wish to cover. Then you can use our calculator tool to as an indication on quantity required. A final manual check on quantities should to be made prior to order.
In the case of decking, yes you can, but the wood will fade to grey and will have a higher chance of cracking and warping. We always recommend application of a penetrating oil all sides prior to fixing and then regular reapplication thereafter as required. For cladding we generally require application of a coating periodically to ensure performance in service.
The gross size (e.g. 100×40) is the size that the timber comes out of the sawmill at. The finished size (e.g. 90×32) is the cross sectional dimension after the timber has been machined. We generally will advise you of the finished size if the timber has been machined.
New Zealand plantation grown radiata pine and douglas fir – and only best quality material is selected for our products.
They sure are. Abodo products are made from natural wood from well managed plantations. This type of wood is quite honestly one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly materials you can buy. As it grows, a tree absorbs vast amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. After the tree has reached maturity it slows down it’s CO2 absorption however. At this stage we harvest the tree and manufacture it into a durable Abodo wood product. During the life time of the product, one and a half new trees have been grown in the original tree’s place. This makes the product a carbon negative and truly self-sustaining building material.
Abodo wood products are proudly 100% New Zealand made. The raw timber comes from plantation forests and manufacturing takes place predominantly in the central part of New Zealand’s North Island.
Yes. Abodo wood products have been made to the lowest toxicity levels we can find using available accepted methods and technology, But it’s our self appointed mission to make them safer.
If you are in New Zealand, you can buy our products through Placemakers, Carters, ITM, Mitre10, Bunnings and most other timber merchants. If you’re outside of New Zealand please contact us for the nearest distributor.
Generally speaking Abodo kiln dried product weighs 450 kg/ m3. You can use our calculator tool to work this out.
This is fairly technical, but here are some examples: 1 Lm of 100×25 decking = 1 Lm x 0.1m x 0.025m = 0.0025m3 1m3 of 150×25 cladding = 1 m3 ÷ 0.15m ÷ 0.025m = 266.66 Lm Remember, you always have to use the gross dimension in these calculations (not the finished dimension). Or use just our calculator tool.
Yes this is possible, depending on order volumes and may be subject to additional charges.
Abodo is one of the first companies in New Zealand to have an end of life disposal solution for their (and others) wood waste. Simply contact us and we’ll organise a disposal bin to take away the wood to where it will be processed and burnt as carbon-neutral fuel source, reducing the consumption of fossil fuels (North Island, New Zealand residents only). Alternatively the products can be burnt in an approved furnace to release embodies energy or dumped in an approved landfill - but that’s the last resort please.
Absolutely. Abodo products are classified as sustainable building materials – and generally attract points under most green building standards, such as New Zealand Green Building Council, Australian Green Building Counil and US Green Building Coucnil (LEED). All Abodo products are Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified.
Abodo Wood products are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certified – ensuring that wood products really are from sustainable sources . You are able to check these details on ww.fsc.org, or email us and we will send you the relevant certifications.

Cladding is bit more technical than decking, so always consult with a professional before starting your project. A Licenced Building Practitioner is required for install. Abodo cladding may be face fixed or secret fixed depending on the profile shape. Stainless steel ring shank nails or self-drilling stainless steel countersunk screws should be used in all cases. Generally we recommend to fix boards onto a drained cavity system to allow good airflow and optimum weather protection. All profiles requires a minimum 2mm expansion gap to be left between boards, You need to ensure all cut ends must are resealed with penetrating oil or sealer. Boards should be coated all sides and re-coated regularly as required thereafter. Refer to the Resources page for more details including installation manual and drawings.
Yes. For most profiles, we offer various corner, flashing, fascia and finishing profiles to match the cladding boards. Using these accessories will ensure optimal performance of the cladding system in service.
For stain finish timber, after exposure to the weather the coating will start to fade and may start to appear blotchy in heavily exposed areas, The coating should be re-applied once it begins to show signs of wear or water stops beading from the surface. Depending on the aspect to the weather re-coat cycle may be 3-5 years. Simply clean and apply one or two coats according to manufacturer’s instructions. For paint finish cladding the recoat period will be longer- up to 7-10 years, however more preparation work is required prior to applying top coats- we recommend to seek professional advice.
Abodo kiln dried decking timber requires allowance for expansion when it gets wet, therefore a larger than normal gap needs to be left between boards- minimum 6mm in most cases. We recommend fixing the boards with two stainless steel screws per joist in all cases such as the Abodo Decking Screw. Abodo decking is nice and easy to fix into – pre drilling is not required in most cases. Joist centres should be at maximum 450mm in most cases. We recommended coating the wood all sides with oil and - regularly as required thereafter. Refer to product technical data sheet on the resources page for more specific info.

After a exposure to the weather and foot traffic, the coating will start to fade and tracking marks may start to appear in heavy traffic areas, The coating should be re-applied once it begins to show signs of wear or water stops beading from the surface. Depending on the aspect to the weather re-coat cycle may be 12-18 months. Love your deck and it’ll love you right back.
This depends on if you install the profiled face up or smooth face up. The profiled face will provide greater slip resistance perpendicular to the deck board edges, however will not be any different in the parallel direction. The smooth face with not provide a great deal of slip resistance, though it will be easier to clean in service, therefore it will be easier to prevent build-up of slippery dirt and mould. Bear in mind that decking is graded to one face eg Abodo Sand is suitable for a smooth face install and Abodo Vulcan is reeded face up installation.
