British artist Giles Miller works in surface, structure and sculpture with projects grounded in neuroscience and led by sensory intention. His designs explore the ways that buildings can behave as living systems by adapting, connecting and responding to their surroundings.

With Eyrie, Giles has created a serene sanctuary for residents and visitors of Green Park in Reading, UK. He responded to the client’s brief - for a space that could offer rest, respite and reflection within this growing community - with a sculptural pavilion that highlights his deep understanding of imagery, character and movement. Eyrie’s façade blends seamlessly into the site’s lakeside surrounds, offering occupants an elegant balance of transparency and intimacy, and providing a welcoming and safe space for quiet contemplation.

“Eyrie draws inspiration from the very landscape in which it sits,” Giles says. “Its form echoes the fractals and natural geometries found in leaves, pinecones, and flower petals. The ‘skin’ of the structure shifts in tone and texture as it flows around the pavilion, resembling the organic transformation of a pinecone through its life cycle. This biomimicry invites visitors to engage with the structure as they would with the natural world - through exploration, curiosity and touch.”

Thousands of custom-designed Abodo Vulcan® Shingles animate the sculpture, creating a tactile exterior that is alive with movement and light. Giles selected rich, warm Abodo timber for this showcase element because of both its durability and its environmental credentials, with Vulcan Shingles being made from Forest Stewardship Council® certified Radiata pine.

Each petal is an object of beauty in its own right, and together they form a swirling, rhythmic skin that envelops the space in movement, tactility, and shifting shadow.”

“As a registered B Corp, Giles Miller Studio is committed to responsible sourcing and sustainable design, and Abodo’s low-impact production process aligns perfectly with these values,” Giles says.

For the Green Park community, Eyrie provides an amenity that is both visually inspiring and practically valuable for everyday use. Its powerful emotional and sensory presence invites visitors to step inside, take a moment, and experience nature from within its petal walls. The curved timber exterior exudes peace with a cocooning effect that promotes physical and emotional calm.

“The warmth and tactility of the timber invite touch, while its natural scent and acoustic qualities soften the space,” Giles says.

“The organic composition of the pavilion fosters a deep biophilic connection and an innate sense of harmony with nature. As a result, Eyrie becomes more than a structure; it is a place where people can slow down and reconnect.”
