Rick Hill and the team at Made by Hideaway specialise in designing and constructing refined, small-scale structures using premium, high-performance materials. The sauna showcases their focused offering of custom-designed outdoor saunas that feature thoughtful design and an innate attention to detail.

The Vulcan Timber Sauna’s brief required a wellness space that blends seamlessly into an established pool area, providing an easy transition between hot and cold therapies. It needed to look “as though the sauna was a part of the original pool design, while using Abodo for the entire build, including Shingles on the roof,” Rick says. “Located at the back of the section and with a large bamboo shelterbelt providing privacy from the neighbours, it sits naturally amongst the planting as if it had always been there.”

“Abodo Vulcan was selected because it is thermally modified through a heat and steam process, rather than chemically treated. This process alters the timber’s cell structure, reducing its moisture uptake and improving its dimensional stability, making it particularly well suited to the demands of a sauna environment.”

- Rick Hill

Timber is an ideal material choice for saunas because of its low thermal conductivity, dimensional stability, and natural durability, as well as its unique ability to adapt to sustained heat, high humidity, and repeated wet and dry cycles.

Abodo Vulcan® timber was chosen for both the interior and exterior of the sauna because it is “a timber that remains stable through extreme temperature fluctuations, maintains its integrity over time, and performs equally well in New Zealand’s challenging outdoor conditions. Its durability, consistency, and natural warmth make it an ideal choice for both the interior experience of a sauna and its exterior aesthetic.”

The shingle detail was one of the most technically challenging elements of the design, as the material needed to allow for the natural expansion and contraction of the timber with changes in moisture and temperature, while still being completely weather tight. “Achieving this required careful consideration of the fixing method, spacing, and overlap of each shingle. The result is a roof that performs reliably in the elements, and aesthetically has this really great rustic, yet architectural, finish.”

Longevity is also a key consideration, Rick says, as the timber used in sauna construction faces extremely high performance demands. “Thermally modified timber performs particularly well in these conditions because the modification process reduces the timber's moisture content, making it far more stable than untreated wood. So less prone to swelling, shrinking, cupping and warping as temperatures and humidity fluctuate."

“The improved stability helps maintain tight joints, crisp detailing, and a consistent appearance over many years of use, while the reduced moisture uptake makes the timber naturally more durable and better able to withstand the demands of a high-moisture environment.”

The best sauna experiences trigger an emotional response and a feeling of deep connection to nature, Rick says. “Traditionally, the sauna has been a communal gathering place, but it has also evolved into a personal retreat: a space for reflection, reconnection and quiet. Timber plays a central role in creating that experience, transforming the sauna into an environment that feels grounded, innately calming, and welcoming.”

Visitors enjoy a full-sensory experience through the tactility and scent of the timber and dynamic steam rising off the hot rocks. These sensations are heightened by the perception of change over time, Rick says, including the developing patina of the timber.

“Every piece is unique, with its own grain, character and history. This individuality gives a sauna a sense of authenticity, meaning and place that manufactured materials cannot easily replicate. “

Inspired by Finnish wellness culture, outdoor saunas are becoming an increasingly common feature of modern homes, Rick says. “We believe saunas and wellness spaces will become an essential part of residential design, much like kitchens and bathrooms are today. Rather than being an afterthought, the sauna will be considered early in the design process as part of the home, thoughtfully positioned to encourage regular use and make sauna bathing an easy and convenient part of everyday living.”
