Wood Choices for Bathrooms

Wood can really make a difference in bathrooms - here's what you need to consider when selecting bathroom timbers.

Bathrooms are typically the land of ceramic tiles, paint and plastic. Natural materials like wood are avoided for fear of mould and contamination. However, wood can really make a difference in bathrooms, and can bring an almost spa like atmosphere to any space.

While wood is a durable choice for bathroom floors, it’s also a great option for walls, ceilings and joinery units. Wood adds a sense of natural warmth in a space where, we are typically, au naturel.

Wood works particularly well as vanity fronts, or ceiling. Things to consider when selecting bathroom timbers include:

Timber choice

Typically durable timbers should be selected with high stability. Bathrooms are subject to fluctuations in moisture, with shower steam being a factor to contend with.

Timbers with low movement, for example our Vulcan Panelling are ideal, they are fungi resistant and have half the normal shrinkage factors of normal wood.

Finish options

Be very careful selecting your clear coat finishes. Film forming coatings should be avoided, while they look good after initial install,

Abodo would recommend a clear hard wax type finish, preferably one with mouldicides.

Rubio Monocoat and Osmo are common brands used in these applications – be sure to check for mouldicides. Hard wax oils will have a long life in ceilings and joinery applications – it is highly likely you will never re-coat them in your lifetime.

Maintenance

Aim to wipe we surfaces clean and free of excess moisture, and the wood will enjoy airflow whereever possible. Mould will grow anywhere, all it requires is warmth and moisture. Keeping surfaces clean will reduce the chance of mould, mildew and discolouration.
