Three Falls - Utah, United States
This mountain home merges with its alpine surroundings, with Abodo timber cladding chosen to withstand the harsh climate.
Named for the three mountain peaks visible from this Utah property, the aesthetics of Three Falls means it merges well with the alpine surroundings while its key materials, including Abodo Vulcan Cladding, are chosen to withstand the dry Utah climate.
Dry alpine conditions are extremely challenging for exterior timber, and the low equilibrium moisture contact of Vulcan Cladding is designed to stand up to the changes in temperature and humidity found in the area.
Designed by local practice Lloyd Architects in Salt Lake City, Three Falls is a contemporary alpine lodge-style house that provides a well-appointed and comfortable family base for mountain adventures.
Abodo distributor partners, reSAWN TIMBER co., worked closely with Lloyd Architects to specify the right finish and fit.
Created from thermally modified FSC® certified New Zealand plantation pine, the eco-timber product is coated in Abodo Protector, a nourishing water borne finish that combines refined plant oils to penetrate into the surface of the timber and protect it from the elements.
With both UV and fungicidal protection as well as a water barrier, the timber is protected from almost anything Mother Nature can throw at it. The timber itself has a patented vertical grain orientation, which slows the process of weathering and creates stability through a deeply grained texture. This is especially important in a location such as this, where temperatures can reach extremes.
Built in 2019, the Cardrona Cabin in the South Island of New Zealand provides a key example of how well this product performs in alpine climates. The combination of thermally modified timber and a naturally silvered Sioo:x Coating means the cladding withstands the heat and cold of the Cardrona valley without warping or buckling.
Now an iconic landmark in its own right, this project uses slatted Vulcan Screening to a dramatic effect, exemplifying the versatility of the product.
For the owners of Three Falls, the use of Abodo Vulcan means longer stretches between maintenance on their cladding, giving them more time to hit the trails and enjoy the comforts of home.
