Charred Timber House - Wanaka, New Zealand

Showcasing the charred timber technique known as Yakisugi or Shou Sugi Ban, our Vulcan Cladding has maintained the beautiful dark finish despite harsh weather conditions*

Abodo’s Vulcan Timber Cladding was charred in the Japanese style known as Yakisugi – or Shou Sugi Ban.

The Vulcan charred finish is a design feature intended to reduce maintenance for the home owner – the thick char layer on the exterior of the timber acts as a barrier to the prominent UV rays found in the region.

Set in Wanaka where summer temperatures soar to 35 degrees the char layer reduces fading and recoat periods while maintaining a beautifully textured black surface.

These photos show the house after two summers, with the house remaining charcoal black and relatively unaffected by the harsh local weather.

Part of Wanaka’s Stackbrae development, this house is masterfully planned and designed by Assembly Architects of Arrowtown.

*The char layer is sacrificial and will wear away over time. Weathering results may differ between geographical locations and climatic conditions.
